Each entry gives a synopsis, cast and credits, critical reception, and a discussion of the events of the films compared to the historical record. $29.95 - Did You Notice? The Wristwatch, Upside Down Gun, Power Pole and Tire Tracks in Western Film Stills by Don Creacy - softcover (7 x 10) 2013 McFarland - Not Yet Published, Available Spring/Summer 2013. There is gold to be found in Western film stills--much of which should not be there at all. In scenes set in the 19th century, you can spot power lines, automobiles parked in the background, a set of rails guiding a wagon across the set. How about visible power cords snaking across a saloon floor? Or the mattress for the stunt man to land on? A modern watch on an 1890s wrist? Band aid on finger? Tire tracks in the Old West dust? In other stills, something important is missing, or someone not in the movie can be seen. Mistakes with guns and costumes abound (left hand, right hand, checks, plain). Or a still may be especially interesting for a reason other than error... Here is a guided tour of some 200 Western stills, each selected for an entertaining oddity. See what you notice! - About the Author: Retired school teacher Don Creacy has had stories published in Under Western Skies, Movie Matinee, Westerns and Serials, Noem’s Nostalgia, The Big Reel, Classic Images, and Springfield Magazine. He lives in Pearl City, Hawaii.

$40.00 – Doc Holliday in Film and Literature by Shirley Ayn Linder - Foreword by Paul A. Hutton - ca. 20 photos, notes, bibliography, index, softcover (6 x 9) 2013 McFarland – Not Yet Published, Available Spring/Summer 2013 - The legend of Doc Holliday is now in its third century. While his time on earth was brief, troubled and filled with pain, his legend took wings and flew. Beginning with his part in the now famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Denver newspapers first told his story in the late 19th century. They, followed by words of Wyatt Earp, grasped the glimmer of his tale. So enamored was the public that by 1939 he was a literary icon and made his first appearance, under his own name, in a movie. Historians, authors, screenwriters and eventually television refined the legend, which reached its apex perhaps with the 1993 film Tombstone. Doc Holliday’s image has neither dimmed nor wavered in the 21st century. Broadway, country music and art join with literature and film to continue his mystique as the personification of a surviving legend of the U.S. West.

$24.95 – Durango by Chuck Thornton – This large 228 page - 8.5 x 11 book was published by Crowbar Press in 2012. Charles Starrett, one of the founding members of the Screen Actors Guild, and an heir to the Starrett Tool Company, was known to many as the Durango Kid. As the masked western hero of the silver screen, he appeared in 65 movies for Columbia Pictures. In addition to that role with which he is most closely identified, Starrett appeared in 67 other western movies for Columbia, most of which were prior to his initial appearance as Durango. He also appeared in films for several other studios early in his acting career.

This lavishly illustrated book covers Charles Starrett in his role as the Durango Kid through a synopsis of each film and an assortment of memorabilia that is sure to please fans of this classic B-western series. Included are more than 270 photographs from the films, copies of film scripts, cast, staff and personnel sheets, comic book covers, magazine articles, newspaper advertisements, and a "Durango" story from the first issue of "Screen Western."

This book is for everyone who remembers spending Saturday mornings and afternoons in the movie palaces of yesteryear, those who are so young they never had the opportunity to enjoy the movie matinees, and those who want to know just what it was that captivated audiences before the days of computers and video games.

$45.00 – Hang ’Em High: Law and Disorder in Western Films and Literature by Bob Herzberg - ca. 45 photos, notes, bibliography, index, softcover (7 x 10) 2013 McFarland - Not Yet Published, Available Spring/Summer 2013 - For more than a century the Western film has proven to be an enduring genre. At the dawn of the 20th century, in the same years that The Great Train Robbery begat a film genre, Owen Wister wrote The Virginian, which began a new literary genre. From the beginning, both literature and film would usually perpetuate the myth of the Old West as a place where justice always triumphed and all concerned (except the villains) pursued the Law. The facts, however, reflect abuses of due process: lynch mobs and hired gunslingers rather than lawmen regularly pursued lawbreakers; vengeance rather than justice was often employed; and even in courts of law justice didn’t always prevail. Some films and novels bucked this trend, however. This book discusses the many Western films as well as the novels they are based on, that illustrate distortions of the law in the Old West and the many ways, most of them marked by vengeance, in which its characters pursued justice. The author has used correspondence from studio files, letters from the Production Code office, newspaper and magazine reviews, passages from the novels to analyze not only the filmmakers’ intentions but also how the films, contrary to reality, became a showcase of America as it promoted the principles of due process, trial by jury, and innocence before proven guilty.- About the Author: Playwright and author Bob Herzberg is a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Western Writers of America. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Both the popular and lesser known series, as well as would-be offerings that never made it past the audition stage, are included. Each entry describes the series, the extent to which it was based on actual facts, the audience it was written for, and its broadcast history. The descriptions also examine how the programs reflected society’s changing social and cultural attitudes towards racial and ethnic minorities and the role of women. The availability of surviving audio copies and original scripts is noted. An extensive bibliography and several appendices provide additional sources of information about Western programming during the Golden Age of Radio. - About the Authors: Jack French, a retired FBI agent, has researched vintage broadcasting for over 40 years. He edits Radio Recall and is the author of Private Eyelashes: Radio’s Lady Detectives, which won the Agatha Award. He was inducted into the Radio Once More Hall of Fame in 2011. Siegel has been collecting Golden Age of Radio broadcasts, scripts, magazines, books and ephemera for over 50 years and has one of the largest radio archives in private hands. $25.00 – The Rodeo and Hollywood: Rodeo Cowboys on Screen and Western Actors in the Arena – by Jim Ryan - 289 photos, appendices, bibliography, index, 408pp. Softcover edition published in 2013 of harcover book first published by McFarland in 2006 - At rodeos in the 1940s, Gene Autry sang and jumped his horse, Champion, through a flaming hoop. In 1960s rodeo arenas, Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker acted out a skit from their hit television show Bonanza. In the same era familiar rodeo personalities like Hoot Gibson and Slim Pickens could be seen in movies or television shows. This book profiles performers who crossed over between film studio and rodeo arena when Hollywood and the rodeo circuit were closely linked. The first part traces the careers of rodeo participants who also contributed to film or television. The next two sections describe rodeo appearances of Western screen stars who entertained at rodeos. Some appeared solo and others with a television co-star or two. A fourth section summarizes rodeo-related films. Appendices introduce golden age rodeo personalities and outline rodeos known for presenting Western stars. About the Author: A fan of westerns from his youth in the 1940s, Jim Ryan is a retired Army Signal Corps officer and special education teacher. A member of the Western Writers of America, the Rodeo Historical Society, and the Dublin (Texas) Rodeo Heritage Association, he lives in Colorado Springs.

$49.95 – Three Bad Men: John Ford, John Wayne, Ward Bond by Scott Allen Nollen - Foreword by Michael A. Hoey - 63 photos, filmographies, notes, bibliography, index, 408pp. softcover (7 x 10) 2013 McFarland - These were unique, complex, personal and professional relationships between master director John Ford and his two favorite actors, John Wayne and Ward Bond. The book provides a biography of each and a detailed exploration of Ford’s work as it was intertwined with the lives and work of both Wayne and Bond (whose biography here is the first ever published). The book reveals fascinating accounts of ingenuity, creativity, toil, perseverance, bravery, debauchery, futility, abuse, masochism, mayhem, violence, warfare, open- and closed-mindedness, control and chaos, brilliance and stupidity, rationality and insanity, friendship and a testing of its limits, love and hate--all committed by a "half-genius, half-Irish" cinematic visionary and his two surrogate sons: Three Bad Men.- About the Author: Scott Allen Nollen was educated in film and history at the University of Iowa. He has written and edited more than 40 books on the history of film, literature and music.

$40.00 – Zane Grey’s Wild West - A Study of 31 Novels – by Victor Carl Friesen - appendix, notes, bibliography, index, softcover (6 x 9) 2013 – McFarland - Not Yet Published, Available Fall/Winter 2013 - This is a literary discussion of one-half of Zane Grey’s Westerns, with a chapter for each selected book. The choices stem from wishing to best show the broad scope of this one-time best-selling author’s interests in the West. My expository treatment explains how these novels "work," while pointing out Grey’s ecological concern for our natural world--its vastness, color and beauty. Wild nature provides a powerful setting but is a determinant of action and of character too. The range of subjects encompasses not only cowboys but also prospectors, foresters and other frontiersmen--from the end of the Revolutionary War to the flapper era of the 1920s. World War I veterans, including an American Indian, are portrayed in several books, and women are colorful main protagonists in others, all uniquely characterized. Grey’s sure ear for dialogue is key to his vivid presentation of the ideals of the Old West. About the Author: Retired teacher Victor Carl Friesen lives in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, Canada.

This definitive book includes John Wayne Enterprises' collection of never-before-seen letters and telegrams as well as incredibly compelling text from Wayne's unfinished memoir. $29.95 – LIFE Unseen: Johnny Cash: An Illustrated Biography With Rare and Never-Before-Seen Photographs ( 2013 Hardcover – 192 pages) by Editors of Life - LIFE partners with Sony Music Entertainment and its vast archive of photography to launch a new series of special books: LIFE Unseen, surprising looks at some of our most legendary stars. We kick off the series with Johnny Cash, who passed away 10 years ago, but it seems like he has never left us. There have been iconic American performers whose lives seemed even larger than their stage personas. Then there was Johnny Cash, unique and-yes-transcendent. He is seen as a country singer, but he is also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gospel Hall of Fame. Coming out of Arkansas, rebellious and an early adherent of rockabilly (he was part of Sun Studios' Million Dollar Quartet, along with Elvis, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis), he found his audience. Cash was also a TV star and he formed supergroups with other top recording artists. Movies were made about the Man in Black, and he would have been calcified as a "legend" had he not been so genuine. LIFE was at its apex when Cash "arrived," and this special volume includes that great photography, interviews with Cash and his family-as well as his soul mate, June Carter Cash, in a special section-and, of course, the never-before-seen imagery. Johnny Cash lives on through his eternal music and personal story-and through this tribute that presents, perhaps even reveals, the Man in Black, Johnny Cash, as you've never seen him. - Publisher: Time Home Entertainment Inc \ B&T
