Back in 1997, we sold our farm and purchased a store in Mankato where we specialize in selling CD+G Karaoke discs. These are CDs which have the song lyric graphics encoded in them. The lead singer vocals are not on the disc but are supplied by the singer. When you play them on a CD+G player (a CD player that has a graphics reader with video out on it) you connect it to your television set and as the music plays the words will appear on your television screen and are individually highlighted as you sing them into the microphone.
For the last fifteen or twenty years, these players have been used mainly in bars where patrons take turns singing their favorite songs. It has become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in this area - and many other parts of the country as well I am told.
While most of the singers are much younger and sing current hit songs, I've found that when I try my hand at karaoke singing my old western favorites - they are generally well accepted by the audience. Some people may not be comfortable singing before and audience in a bar, but I want to assure everyone that you don't have to sound like a professional singer and there is no penalty for making a mistake from time to time. No matter how bad a you may think you did a song - your can rest assured that you will not be the worst singer there that night. I would advise that you try singing songs you love and are familiar with - the same ones you sing in the shower or along with the radio as you are going down the road.
Also, now that home karaoke CD players are available starting at around $50.00, there has been a real increase in home karaoke. About half or our karaoke sales are now to people who host karaoke in bars, and the other half to people who have their own home karaoke players.
There are over a dozen companies that make CD+G karaoke discs. Many of the same songs are available on several different labels. I (and most people I know who are familiar with karaoke) have found that in most cases the best version of a song on karaoke is on the discs manufactured by Sound Choice®.
Not every karaoke host has every karaoke disc in his library, so I have found that it is a good idea to bring along some of your own CD+G discs when you attend an event where you are not familiar with what the karaoke host has. I've yet to have a karaoke host turn me down when I ask him if he will play one of my own discs for me to sing to.
